It’s retro time, at one of Phoenix’s old-time favorites, MacAlpine’s Diner and Soda Fountain, open again after a Covid shut-down.
Back in 1929, MacAlpine’s originally opened, under the name Birch’s, as a pharmacy with it’s signature soda fountain as was often done back then. Business boomed throughout the 1950’s and 60’s when sock-hopping teeny boppers frequented the soda fountain.
The Phoenix icon grew in popularity and nostalgia through the years and became part of local lore. The Pharmacy closed in the 1990’s, but the soda fountain along with some great eats continued to thrive.
However, when Covid hit, MacAlpine’s closed its doors in 2020 for the first time since opening. Being born anew, in April 2024, MacAlpine’s began selling pies online and set up a GoFundMe in order to defray costs for a reopening.
Fortunately for us, it’s working. Not only pies, but customers can now step back in history and visit MacAlpine’s for a delicious lunch, Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Enjoy hamburgers, sandwiches, salads, and, of course, pies, shakes, banana splits, and all things ice cream. Prices are reasonable for meals. Ice cream creations will run you around $8-$12, but remember, that’s what MacAlpine’s is known for. Prices will vary with the reopening, so be prepared when you visit.
MacAlpine’s is located at 2303 North Seventh Street, Phoenix, 85006. Right at the northeast corner of 7th Street and Oak.
Parking is free but limited. There’s some parking spaces on the southside of MacAlpine’s building off Oak Street, and a few more along Oak Street too. Beware, you may have to walk a bit.
