National Margarita Day – A day celebrated around the world
National Margarita Day is a day celebrated on February 22nd every year, yes every year and it honors the cocktail we love around the world. Its made of tequila, triple sec and various fruit juices like lemon or the ever-popular mango.
The tale of the margarita’s beginning says it was Don Carlos Orozco’s drink. He came up with this yummy mix in October of 1941. Mr. Orozco was working as a bartender at Hussong’s Cantina, a restaurant in Mexico when the daughter of the German ambassador named Margarita Henkel walked into the restaurant and asked for a special drink. The drink he came up with was equal parts tequila, an orange liqueur, and lime. This special mix was then placed in a salt-rimmed glass and served to her. Since this lady’s name was Margarita, that is the name that he gave the drink.
The first published recipe for this drink was in the December 1958 issue of Esquire. This recipe called for an ounce of tequila with dashes of triple sec and lime juice. The drink really gained popularity when a musician called Jimmy Buffett released a song called Margaritaville.
Choose your favorite recipe and whip one up or go by your favorite bar and order it. While you are at it, enjoy a taco or nacho’s and don’t forget to listen to Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville.
