Make it a family Challange!
Parents can keep their at-home classrooms active this summer and help prevent a “summer slide” in their child’s education with the help of the Chandler Public Library. Once again, Chandler libraries are participating in the annual Summer Reading Challenge for children ages 4-12, which rewards young students with prizes for feeding their minds.
The theme of the 2020 reading challenge is “Imagine Your Story,” and while it emphasizes the importance of reading at an early age, the challenge is open to people of all ages. Participants are encouraged to read 20 minutes a day. Readers will earn one point per minute for reading physical or electronic books (including graphic novels) or listening to audiobooks. Additional points are earned for attending virtual programs and completing online challenges.
Maricopa County residents are encouraged to register for the program now so they are ready to begin on June 1, when participants can start logging their summer reading and activities at Read20az.com (English) or leepor20az.com (Spanish).
Chandler Public Library readers of all ages can check out books to read, read their own books, use audiobooks, and get ebooks at home through the online CloudLibrary or Tumblebooks. Read 20 minutes a day, log your time, and enter win prizes. Any kind of reading counts, even being read to (for our youngest library users).
Start logging your summer reading activities for prizes, beginning June 1. Anyone who logs 1,000 points (1 minute of reading = 1 point) can choose a free book from an online marketplace, while supplies last. Compete with family and friends to see who can log the most reading minutes this summer. Read as much as you want before August 1, then come into the library in August to pick up your prizes!
Prizes include a free personal pizza from Peter Piper Pizza, free lemonade from Raising Cane’s, and an Arizona State Park pass. Grand Prize drawings will also take place at each participating library for the chance to win family passes to Legoland Discovery Center/Sea Life Aquarium. Readers who achieve 1,000 points can choose a free book for their home library or can donate it to a local Head Start classroom. Last year, Head Start classrooms in Maricopa County received more than 1,500 books thanks to the generosity of summer readers across the Valley.
