Looking for a quiet place to remember our Fallen Heroes this Memorial Day weekend? Consider visiting Wesley Bolin Plaza in downtown Phoenix. Many areas of service, all worthy of being honored, are represented in multiple memorials within the Plaza.
The Plaza was created in 1978 in honor of former Arizona Governor Wesley Bolin and is adjacent to the State Capitol building. The Plaza is home to 11 different monuments, statues, and plaques, which honor those who’ve served our state and country. You’ll also find beautiful gardens, walking paths, benches, and fountains at the Wesley Bolin Plaza.
Memorials at Wesley Bolin Plaza
World War II memorials include the USS Arizona Memorial, commemorating the ship sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Navajo Code Talkers Memorial statue is along the main path of the Plaza. The Jewish War Veterans Memorial honors those who served during World War II. The 4th Marine Division is also honored.
Memorials from multiple wars can also be seen around the Plaza. There are memorials for those who served in World War I, the Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and Operation Enduring Freedom. A special memorial for those who’ve received the Purple Heart represents recipients from multiple wars.
You can also acknowledge those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 at the Arizona 9/11 Memorial. In remembering all of our Fallen Heroes, it’s hoped that we come together as a community in order to honor those who’ve gone before us to pave a way for a better existence for us all.
